Hey Internet Friends,
Due to exams coming up, posts may be slightly late (like this one) so I apologise in advance. I will, however, make up for lack of posts when possible. Now, on with todays book review.
Title: Skulduggery Pleasant
Author: Derek Landy
Blurb: (From Wikipedia) Twelve-year-old Stephanie Edgley is tired of her boring life. But when a man breaks into her recently deceased uncle's house and tries to kill her, she is saved by a funny, arrogant, fireball-throwing, 400-year-old detective named Skulduggery Pleasant, who just so happens to be a walking skeleton, and she is thrust into a world of danger, murder and magic. Taking the new name of Valkyrie Cain, she partners up with Skulduggery to solve her uncle's murder, and to prevent the devious Nefarian Serpine from obtaining the Sceptre of Ancients, a mystical weapon that can slay gods. The sceptre is a powerful weapon which can be used to defeat and overcome the world and bring back the Faceless Ones.
Rating: 8/10
Comment: Loved them when I was younger and still do now. Brilliant characters that have different personalities. Exciting to read but aren't too complex. Yes, the book as well as the rest of the series is meant for children but as a girl in her late teens these are still brilliant, even my Dad enjoyed them.

Book Review
Hey Internet Friends,
So, as promised here is the second post this week. I hope you enjoy.
Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Blurb: In sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior’s world, society is divided into five factions – Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent) – each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue, in the attempt to form a “perfect society.” At the age of sixteen, teens must choose the faction to which they will devote their lives.
On her Choosing Day, Beatrice renames herself Tris, rejects her family’s group, and chooses another faction. After surviving a brutal initiation, Tris finds romance with a super-hot boy, but also discovers unrest and growing conflict in their seemingly “perfect society.” To survive and save those they love, they must use their strengths to uncover the truths about their identities, their families, and the order of their society itself.
Rating: 9/10 - Couldn't put it down.
Comment: If you have seen the film, I urge you to read the books, as I found them much better than the films.

Book Review - Nineteen Eighty-Four

Author: George Orwell
Blurb: Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.
Why I started reading it: It's one of the novels I'm studying as part of English Literature. Loved it the first time I read it and continue to enjoy it each time I re-read it. Despite holding quite political views, it's such a gripping novel. Not the happiest, I'll admit (but what do you expect from a dystopian novel), however there is a nice sprinkle of romance in there.
